What is sphenomandibular ligament?

The sphenomandibular ligament is a band of fibrous tissue that connects the sphenoid bone (specifically the spine of the sphenoid bone) to the lingula of the mandible. It is one of the ligaments that help to stabilize the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in the jaw.

The sphenomandibular ligament plays a role in limiting the movement of the mandible, preventing it from opening too wide or moving too far forward. It also helps to support the joint during movements such as chewing, speaking, and yawning.

Injury to the sphenomandibular ligament can result in pain, stiffness, and limited range of motion in the jaw. Treatment typically involves rest, physical therapy, and pain management techniques. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to repair or reconstruct the damaged ligament.
